Actors, Motives, and Aftermath DESCRIPTION:The robbery of the Jewish population in Europe was a significant feature of the Holocaust. This applies not only to Nazi Germany, but also to the countries occupied by Germany and, in parts, to the allies of the Nazi regime. Whether the state, the economy or individuals benefited, Holocaust research has documented the various robbery practices as a social process in numerous local and regional studies in which large parts of the population were involved. The connection between economic interest, ideology, and mass murder has always been a topic of discussion. Material aspects of the robbery continue to the present day, with the history of robbery and restitution beyond Western Europe receiving little attention so far. Therefore, the planned section will focus particularly on Eastern and South-eastern European countries. Without questioning the central role and responsibility of Nazi Germany as the cause and main actor of the Holocaust, the dynamics of robbery and murder, as well as questions of complicity and profiteering, will be illuminated in the invaded and collaborating countries, as well as their aftermath. Supra-regional, comparative approaches place the international and interconnected character of the confiscation of the property of the Jewish population in Europe in a pan-European context. Combining macro- and micro-historical perspectives sharpens the view of the phenomenon of robbery and its aftermath. Approaches from recent international Holocaust research are brought together and discussed. The proposed section thus contributes to a broad social history of the Holocaust as well as to pressing social and moral issues to this day. Der Beitrag Robbery and the Holocaust in Europe.
