SUMMARY:[Historikertag 2023] Sexual Abuse as a Topic for Contemporary Historians: Perspectives and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:In recent years, the public has become increasingly concerned with abuse in the sense of sexualized violence. This highly emotional topic is of relevance to society as a whole and cannot be limited to the Catholic Church. Abuse is part of the history of violence in the Federal Republic of Germany and therefore deserves appropriate contextualization. This is shown by the processes of coming to terms with sexualized violence in institutional contexts (churches, sports, boarding schools, homes). In dialogue with other sciences, such as legal history, forensics or pedagogy, these processes are increasingly attracting the interest of contemporary history research.
From a methodological point of view, the study of abuse faces particular challenges because the findings from written and oral tradition prove to be particularly fragile. While, for example, the informational value of church records remains vague due to linguistic paraphrases of the relevant facts and the perspective of those affected remains unclear, oral history faces particular challenges. For example, eyewitness interviews - of victims as well as of the accused - present the interviewers with difficulties that cannot be adequately solved with the tried and tested instruments of oral history. Researching abuse thus requires reflection on the application and usefulness of proven methods, especially against the background of "fragile facts" and existing battles over interpretation.
At the same time, the social conditions in which abuse is possible need to be studied in more detail. This involves social structures in towns and villages, associations and parishes or of families, the conditions of silence and what can be said, as well as legal or medical assessments. In this context, the way the topic is dealt with can serve as a seismograph for the dynamics of change within society. This section will also ask what expectations those affected by sexualized violence have of historical scholarship.
