DESCRIPTION:Foreign correspondents are indispensable to newspapers, radio, and television. Since the 19th century, they have seen themselves as a specific group within professional journalism and developed a special professional ethos. The way in which correspondents interpreted events in other countries and how they reported on foreign policy gained in importance with the medialization of public communication, and international relations became increasingly important. The correspondents transmitted news and 'facts', they covered media events that were discussed in the national and European-transnational public spheres. Some have always been suspected of "Tartar news" (Paul Scheffer) and invented facts instead of seriously researched reports. In the ideologically divided world after the Russian Revolution of 1917, the politicizing interpretive battles between the correspondents increased. Long before they were analyzed by historians, the correspondents reported on events, structures, and processes. It is all the more astonishing that their practical activities, their professional networks, the relationships between them and the journalistic (wo)men on the spot, professional self-images, and political and social role attributions have only recently come into view from a media-historic perspective.
The contributions to this section will examine the practices, networks and interpretive struggles of foreign correspondents in the short 20th century and thus offer new perspectives on journalistic work in the field that go beyond an analysis of their reporting. It is about network analyses of the correspondents, which show how "facts" are created and disseminated. In this way, we provide media-historical approaches to concrete interactions in the interwoven fields of (foreign) policy, journalism, diplomacy, and civil society.
