Inflations and Economic Paradigms in the 20th Century DESCRIPTION:The current return of inflation after a relatively long phase of price stability reminds us that increases in the macroeconomic price level are a regular concomitant of capitalist economies. The causes and magnitudes, however, are irregular: Inflation can have economic or political reasons, reflect shortages of supply or excess demand and can be moderate or dramatic. Inflation rates are not only indicators of the cyclical or structural problems of an economy. They are also a socio-historical phenomenon because they influence structures of social inequality and arouse anxieties about the future, which can shift the relationship between creditors and debtors sustainably and, in extreme cases, destroy the financial livelihoods of large parts of the population. Therefore, their dampening is considered a central task of economic and, in particular, monetary policy. Accordingly, the presentations of the section move at the intersections of economic and political history. In a longitudinal section through the 20th century and in an international comparison, the guiding question is pursued as to whether different political reactions to the depreciation of currencies and the associated price increases can be attributed to economic and economic policy paradigm shifts. This brings actor constellations into focus that go far beyond the narrower field of monetary policy: the admission or suppression of inflation was the result of negotiation processes that were influenced by economic policy priorities and economic expertise as well as voter interests and media commentary. Ultimately, this reflected the prevailing or contested ideas of the purpose and legitimacy of state action and economic orders. The event will take place in the Zimeliensaal of the museum.
