With the technical innovations of photography and printing since the late 19th century, new dynamics have developed in the forms of production and dissemination. Technical innovations not only guarantee a seemingly "mechanical objectivity" (Daston/Galison), but also the mass distribution of type photographs in printed works, "cartes des visites," and eventually postcards. However, the "folk types" tend to depict typical representatives of the respective group, they are often created for a broad market, and they show seemingly spontaneously captured scenes of everyday life. However, the images are highly staged and manipulated, thus representing unreliable representations. Their creation and use, according to the central thesis of the section, corresponded with the epistemological preconditions of imperial, national, colonial, and regional discourses and power relations. At the same time, it is striking that these representations are very similar in form and aesthetics worldwide, regardless of whether the contexts are colonial or national. The proposed section brings together research on different regional contexts worldwide and focuses on photography in terms of its mediality. It also aims to examine current engagements with these sometimes highly problematic representations of type from an artistic and activist perspective. It addresses the following questions: To what extent did ideological preconditions influence the use of the images? What differences can be identified in a regional comparison, and how, on the other hand, can the similarity of the types be classified? How did the types circulate, how were they received? What were the resistances? How do we look at the "folk types" today? Der Beitrag „Types“ Between Colonialism and Nationalism in the 19th and 20th Century erschien zuerst auf Historikertag 2023.
