DESCRIPTION:With the feudal system, the section looks at a field of research that has long been considered "explored", but since the impulses given by Susan Reynolds in the 1990s has been subjected to a fundamental revision and is now being discussed from the ground up. Within the discipline of history, the topic can be reworked in a variety of ways, with a supposedly secure knowledge base increasingly revealed as a fragile set of facts. For medieval studies, for instance, the question arises, whether referring to Europe as a whole or to one region alone, based on which terms feudalism is recognizable as a historical phenomenon in the sources. A previously postulated inevitable connection between vassalage as a personal component and feudalism as a material component proved to be constructed in many cases. This misunderstanding of sources also points to numerous references to contemporary political history, which is no less exciting as a field of investigation for feudalism. For didactics, on the other hand, it has not been conclusively clarified how to further deal with the feudal pyramid established textbook, which has actually been completely deconstructed as an explanatory model for medieval society. The indicated variety of possible approaches is used for the section to arrive at a more comprehensive picture of the obviously fragile object of investigation and to make a relevant contribution to the ongoing research debate. Because of its content alignment, the section is also of great interest to teachers and students.
