DESCRIPTION:When societies are confronted with massive past injustices, both state and non-state actors increasingly commission ad hoc commissions - investigation commissions, expert commissions, truth commissions - as well as researchers at universities to investigate historical facts. The work within this "commissioned history" takes place in a fundamental tension. On the one hand, the commissions and historians commissioned for such projects produce knowledge about the past with a scientific claim to objectivity. The scientific nature of producing this knowledge is crucial for the intended effect in the public. On the other hand, the commissions and projects usually involve those affected - and thus parts of the public - in their work, most commonly by allowing them to make statements about the past and testify in the investigations. The memories of the experiences and expectations associated with the statements made by those who testify are not easily reconciled with the epistemological claims of the commissions and researchers. The panel discusses, with examples of different types of "commissioned history," how commissions and research projects have dealt with this tension in their reconciliation mission. It asks how the challenge of establishing historical facts was affected by the integration of memory-based narratives of those affected by past injustices into their work and the final presentation of their results.
