SUMMARY:[Historikertag 2023] Transnational Entanglements in the Polish Lithuanian-Saxon Union. A New Approach to the Study of the History of East Central Europe in the 18th Century
DESCRIPTION:The history of Saxony, Poland, and Lithuania, as well as Belarus and Ukraine, are closely intertwined due to their shared heritage of the Saxon-Polish-Lithuanian Union from 1697 to 1763 under the King-Electors August II and August III. Due to the dominant national focus of research, this period was long treated with little regard in the respective countries. However, for some time now, European perspectives have played an increasingly important role in research, helping to overcome often stereotypical national viewpoints. At the same time, research has recently focused intensively on phenomena of cultural contact, exchange, interweaving, and hybridization of societies, as well as specific premodern forms of rule such as personal unions and composite states. Supposedly secure facts about the Union are being questioned by these new perspectives, and traditional interpretations are proving to be fragile.
The aforementioned changes in perspective offer numerous starting points for a new approach to researching the history of Central Eastern Europe in the 18th century, but cross-border cooperation on this topic has not yet been well established. The aim of the section is to discuss the respective research traditions and explore the opportunities for transnational research on interweaving, cultural transfer, and knowledge circulation with historians from Poland, Lithuania, and Germany. Examples will be examined that fall under overarching themes such as networks, communication, and objects/materiality.
The focus is deliberately not only on the period of the Union from 1697 to 1763 but on the "long" 18th century as a whole, to make the longer-term effects on the mentioned fields visible in the longue durée from the late 17th to the early 19th century.
