DESCRIPTION:As is well known, there is a difference between historical reality and archival tradition. In short, what is handed down does not represent the completeness of what once emerged as a source. There are always gaps in the tradition: There may have been deliberate destruction, accidental loss, or forgotten transmission. A deliberate invention or falsification of digital documents is also conceivable.
The connection between existing tradition and research based on it has often been the subject of epistemological considerations. The question is always whether and to what extent a source-positivist evaluation unduly distorts historical accounts, or whether the tradition itself skews the entire historiography. These discussions were conducted in the 1960s under the banner of social history, which had been rather neglected until then and since the 1980s under the rubric of deconstructivism.
In the current discussion, however, the problem of a patchy and limited tradition has turned into a complaint about the overabundance of tradition. This circumstance raises the question of what expectations historians have of the archival record, what role archivists play in the selection of records in their appraisal process and what technological problems between preservation, appraisal/development and evaluation play a role. In each of the three respects, questions can be asked about the factuality of tradition, whether it is written or audio-visual sources.
These questions point to various possibilities for an epistemological consideration of the interrelationship between tradition and the emergence of facticity. What is an authentic tradition with integrity? What are the preconditions, what are the consequences for the work of archives and what are the consequences for historians?
