SUMMARY:[Historikertag 2023] Fragile Finances. Dynasties, Debts and Female Crisis Managers in the Early Modern Period
DESCRIPTION:In the case of states, economic and financial stability are seen as a guarantee of political security while wealth and financial independence are at the same time also indicators of status and rank in noble families. In contrast, insecure, fragile finances pose a threat in dynastic contexts. Discussions about the financial legacy of the recently deceased Queen Elizabeth II and arguments about the need for a financially independent royal family demonstrate the relevance of these issues. However, in historiography these contexts have only been partially addressed in excerpts.
Using case studies from the early modern period, the heyday of dynastic rule in Europe, this section examines the significance of economics and finance for noble and ruling families across hierarchies. In noble families of varying status, from the Oldenburgs, royal in Denmark and dukes in the empire, to the Landgraves of Hesse and the Counts of Leyen, to Austrian princely and count dynasties, financial problems not only had an intra-dynastic impact, but in some cases influenced long-term political decisions. The contributions shed light on "fragile finances" based on examples of financial constraints due to war and conflicts and changing economic and legal framework conditions up to debt crises and bankruptcy proceedings. In addition to the fundamental analysis of moments of uncertainty in dynastic finances and their solutions, the role of the dynasty or family in debt crises is examined. It is striking that women repeatedly acted as advisors, financiers and managers in financial crises within the dynasty. Finally, the section also deals with political and legal procedures for debt management, considering aristocratic status.
