In the past three decades, the development of transitional justice and the numerous "truth commissions" worldwide have underscored this view. The goal of many of these bodies is to provide reparations by uncovering facts about past human rights violations, allowing for reconciliation and accountability. Only recently have scholars begun to examine the complex relationship between truth and compensation more closely by critically examining both the strategies of the actors involved in compensation and the temporal dimension of historical processes. Our panel builds on this by discussing the following guiding questions: Did German post-war compensation actually aim to uncover and establish historical truths, or did it rather promote fragile facts about German history in practice? Did German compensation payments for Holocaust survivors and refugees contain theoretical justifications that were factually disputed, and if so, how was this problem addressed? Who (if anyone) reflected on the factual fragility of German compensation, and why? Did such reflection lead to a challenge to the practices and norms of compensation? To what extent can a critical examination of the historical constellation of truth and practice in post-war German restitution stimulate current research on global reparations? These questions are explored through six case studies that address key aspects of German compensation in the post-war period and invite critical discussion about their place in global and contemporary history.
