This field offers novel ways of accessing sources, but at the same time, it requires new forms of source criticism and a methodological and conceptual rethinking of historical, especially non-canonical, traditions. An example of this is the interest in the fluid everyday practices, knowledge, experiences and emotions of mobile people. On the one hand, these voices are not adequately represented in classical archival collections and on the other hand, this lacuna persists in a large part of research. These challenges are taken up by the cross-epochal section, which engages with fundamental conceptual and epistemological challenges in the study of migration and mobility. The section discusses these challenges based on selected empirical examples and concrete traditions from the 17th to the 20th century. The overarching question is: how can historical research understand the dynamic and diverse, often adversarial and fragmentarily documented life and knowledge worlds of mobile actors, including their relatively immobile reference groups? What gaps and potentials does the existing tradition offer for this purpose? Speakers from four countries and different sub-disciplines of historiography will discuss how non-canonical and increasingly digitally accessible source corpora contribute to the diversification of historical knowledge and what innovative impulses they provide for research. They will also demonstrate how long-known serial sources can be re-read with digital and hermeneutic methods and how they can be productively combined with source material that researchers have not yet discovered or have neglected. Finally, they will identify the resulting challenges for historical source criticism. The event will take place in the Great Lecture Hall of the mususem.
