The Fragility of Environmental Knowledge in Modernity DESCRIPTION:Newer approaches in Sensory Studies emphasize the importance of senses and emotions for the production of knowledge. This seems particularly relevant for the question of environmental knowledge. Therefore, we inquire about the influence of sensory perception on the production or questioning of knowledge using the example of climate and environmental debates in the 19th and 20th centuries, a period of supposed exclusion of the senses as an access to knowledge and increasing rationalization. The aim of the section is to raise further questions about the relationship between sensory perception of the environment and dealing with factual knowledge: How was knowledge about the environment and climate confirmed or questioned through sensory perception in modern times? What role did emotions play in this? The contributions shed light on the interweaving of knowledge, sensory perception and emotions using the example of climate, sustainability and nature conservation in the 19th and 20th centuries. Various sources will be examined, ranging from scientific investigations to media reports, ego documents and literature. Overall, we argue for a connection between Sensory Studies, the history of knowledge and environmental history with a sensory-specific focus on environmental knowledge. Der Beitrag Sensory ‘Facts’?
