DESCRIPTION:What do we consider as "authentic" historical knowledge today and on which facts is this knowledge based? How were such facts generated and validated in the first place?
Facts are media products that were usually communicated via texts or artifacts. But how were they validated? What strategies were used in the pre-modern era to secure them, to remove their fragility and to authenticate them?
For centuries, the validation of texts or objects was the task of various experts. They developed test procedures to declare their objects of study as authentic and it was incumbent upon them to distinguish genuine items from fakes. But how much weight was given to the experts and the importance of their person (Steven Shapin) and what role did specific scholarly practices and methods play? The five contributions take a close look at both, the actors and the practices of verification, authentication and validation between the early Middle Ages and the 19th century.
Who decides in these cases what is authentic and what is not? From what social position do the decision-makers act, or how do they legitimize their authority? And what role did suspicion of deception or false testimony or even deliberate deception play?
Forgeries usually had a very clear purpose; they were intended to create facts from which certain actors benefited on the economic, political or religious-political or social level. At the same time, however, they played a central role in the development of critical methods and procedures of validation (Anthony Grafton).
The contributions to this panel focus on controversial texts and artifacts ranging from the lead books of Granada, early medieval anonymous tracts and testimonies of mystical experiences to the dating and testing of relics and dinosaur skeletons.
