Actors struggled over which knowledge should be considered factual. What should count as 'true' must therefore be understood more from its processuality. The genesis of facticity is a process of the consummation of carrying out individual or interrelated practices. Related practices could compete in the process. Travelers disputed, for example, how to relate the plant world in the Ottoman Empire to ancient texts. Missionaries, merchants, travelers, and increasingly men and women who saw themselves as researchers played a central role in this process. What information did they gather, and how did they verify and communicate it to an audience? For the early modern period, the question arises of how knowledge was determined, what was considered true or false, and which practices authors (less often female authors) used to establish and enforce new knowledge. The section examines how knowledge was produced, its factuality claimed or questioned in different fields of knowledge from the 16th-19th centuries. In doing so, we use a praxeological approach: How did practices, such as comparative, collecting, or surveying practices affect the production of knowledge, how was facticity questioned through practices? We also ask how we as historians deal with such knowledge, especially when it is considered obsolete today, such as humoral pathology. Which approaches do we use to reflect on historical facticity and examine it in its own logic? What potentials do these approaches offer for looking at contemporary facts? What difficulties and methodological problems do they pose for the critical reflection of the history studied?
