Methods and Results of Medieval Historiographical Research DESCRIPTION:Truth claims, alternative perspectives and fragile arguments have always been areas of investigation in historiography research. Since its inception, historiography has developed increasingly sophisticated tools such as methods for critical evaluation, which not only stand for reflective analysis of medieval media strategies, but also strengthen judgment in relation to current discourses challenged by concepts like alternative facts. In this regard, medieval historiography research offers a highly differentiated, critical toolkit for evaluation, as well as a methodological treasure trove in dealing with different claims to facticity. The section demonstrates the diversity of instruments for analyzing historiographical techniques through various deep dives into different areas of late medieval historiography. For example, history books commissioned by rulers or princes, such as the Gesta Friderici Ottos von Freising or the Fürstliche Chronik Jakob Mennels, aimed to portray their reign in an especially positive light for contemporaries and posterity. Other unwanted events were distorted, omitted, or simply ignored. Historiography research can show how collective disregard for divergent positions through standard narratives, selection, or panegyric elevation - a cancel culture avant la lettre - should shape posterity. The aim of the section is therefore to demonstrate in detail the differentiated tools and methods for analyzing historiographical texts using examples from later medieval historiography and to raise awareness of their importance for current debates on fragile facticity.
