After a large body of works was written in the 1960s and 1970s, including groundbreaking works on the economic history of colonialism, German colonial historiography has primarily been nourished by approaches of global history and postcolonial studies since the end of the 1990s. Much of the work produced during this period was influenced by the cultural turn in the humanities. For example, works exploring “Colonial Phantasies” (Zantop; Kundrus) or cultural manifestations of colonialism (Langbehn) were produced. Recently, numerous studies have been devoted again to the social and economic history of German colonialism, focusing more strongly on the materialistic foundations of German colonial rule and its consequences. This section presents some of these works, which together constitute a new field within new colonial history. The multitude of approaches, perspectives, and research questions points to the heterogeneity of the field, whose common interest is to analyze and differentiate the social and economic practice of colonial rule. We aim to bring these different subfields of historical scholarship into conversation with each other, including global history, labor history, economic and business history. Thus, the connection between racism and labor relations (Haschemi Yekani), transcolonial transfers (Kleinöder), as well as postcolonial continuities (Nkwi Gam), are taken into consideration. Furthermore, the panel addresses the role of African entrepreneurs during German colonial rule (Oestermann), transformations of economic relations (Tchoula) after the formal end of colonialism, as well as the importance of companies in securing and maintaining colonial rule (Todzi).
