DESCRIPTION:When facts seem more fragile nowadays, a historical perspective is appropriate. Certainly, in the 21st century, the field of history is highly aware of the multiperspectivity of perception of reality, but the question remains how the discipline should deal with the multiplicity of perspectives: because the fact that every history can only reflect a limited perspective on historical reality does not mean that every perspective has the same empirical validity. The question of why certain perspectives meet with approval or rejection in their respective interpretive contexts can, in our opinion, be studied very fruitfully from an ancient historical perspective.
This section focuses on case studies in which the interpretive authority of certain actors or groups has decisively shaped the discourse on reality: factualness appears here, at best, as only one of the factors that influences the narrative, alongside political and generational power structures or cultural ideals of all kinds. By seeing how factualness has been demanded, asserted, or restricted in these cases, antiquity can function as a laboratory for the social negotiation of different perspectives. The greater our understanding of the complex mechanisms that play a role in the construction and acceptance of factual narratives in a variety of contexts, the more it is possible to determine how factualness and multiperspectivity can be reconciled intersubjectively, which can also bear fruit for the promotion of questioning problematic patterns of thought in schools and universities. Our concern therefore not only relates to fundamental historical problems but is also relevant to current issues - from postcolonialism to so-called lateral thinkers - for which increased intersubjectivity is urgently needed.
