Labour and Education in the 20th Century DESCRIPTION:This section is dedicated to the intersection of the history of education, work, and subject formation in the 20th century. The place that individuals could occupy in society was increasingly determined by their educational background and tied to concepts such as "talent," "performance," and "qualification." However, the semantics of these terms were highly contested. Not only were attempts to formalize degrees debated, but also forms of qualifications that did not fit into established norms, because they aimed at future requirements, could not be translated into national standards, or taught "soft skills" whose substance remained subject to interpretation. How could education and qualifications be measured, evaluated, and compared? What procedures were developed for this purpose, and what rationality did they follow? How did this change education systems and work societies? Education for the labor market is understood in the section as a historically changeable concept that should be understood and manageable with the help of standardization, indicators, and numbers. The central thesis is that the procedures developed for this purpose could only create "fragile facts" since the demands for qualifications changed and constantly brought about reassessments. Nevertheless, they decided on career entry, advancement, and social mobility opportunities. At the center are discourses on and practices of evaluating qualifications, as they became virulent through political upheavals or paradigm shifts in education and labour market policy. The contributors examine the genesis and communication of facts about the education of labour subjects, inquire about the relevant actors, reconstruct the establishment of expert cultures and discuss the consequences of their supposedly reliable knowledge production for socio-economic and cultural processes of change.
