SUMMARY:[Historikertag 2023] Fragile Memory. Social Media and Their Influence on the Culture of Remembrance in Science and the Public Sphere
DESCRIPTION:No other medium has developed a stronger dynamic in the past ten to 15 years than the Internet. Social media in particular, with their participatory possibilities, have permanently changed the public media landscape. The effects on the culture of remembrance are diverse and at the same time controversial. New mediation formats on Instagram, Twitter or TikTok are controversially discussed in public, while scientific research in the context of public history is still largely in its infancy. At the same time, institutions of civic education and memorial sites face the challenge of using social media as a means of communication to better reach their target audience and enable interactions between users.
The section outlines the importance of social media for public memory culture from different perspectives. Starting with concrete formats dealing with the mediation of Nazi history (on TikTok) and the memory of the GDR (on Instagram), the potential for a more diverse form of memory culture will be questioned. Following on from this, practical contributions will highlight the opportunities for conveying historical topics in social media. Last but not least, it is important to point out the limits and dangers of unreflected mediation, for example, when projects convey the appearance of historical authenticity without contextualization. 
In addition to the professional audience, the section is also aimed at teachers and students.
The event will take place in the Great Lecture Hall of the Museum.
