SUMMARY:[Historikertag 2023] Citizen Science and the Historical Facts
DESCRIPTION:Research outside of universities and civic engagement leading to publications have a long tradition in the field of history. However, with the advent of digitalization, the conditions for historical research conducted by citizen scientists and the emergence of public history and citizen science movements from the natural sciences have changed. This section analyzes the production, generation, interpretation and linkage of historical facts by citizen scientists, as well as the modeling of these facts as data. Crowdsourcing for data creation benefits from the large number of volunteers in the digital world who invest time in such projects. However, questions arise about the quality of the data and the bias of the resulting corpus when citizen scientists set priorities based on their non-scientific interests. This applies to transcriptions, as well as to indexing data in memory institutions or data objects and their linking in the Wikiverse. In exhibitions involving citizen scientists and in recreating historical events, the interpretation of supposedly secure facts and the production of new facts are in a complex interplay. In collaborating with citizen scientists, professional historians as well as memory institutions must constantly decide when and how to maintain quality management and enforce scientific standards without losing the motivation and historical interest of the volunteers and without hampering citizen science engagement.
