SUMMARY:[Historikertag 2023] Beyond Fact Checking—Young People’s Historical Research as a Form of Cultural Capital
DESCRIPTION:History competitions are intended to stimulate historical learning, research and discourse processes and to promote critical engagement with competing historical interpretations and narratives. In view of the plurality of historical experiences and memories as well as the increasing political instrumentalization of historical facts and narratives, these objectives are becoming more and more important. The establishment of historical research by students as a historical-cultural practice is inextricably linked to the history of the German President's History Competition. Launched in 1973 as an educational project for democracy, the competition has developed into one of the largest lay historical research movements and has an impact beyond Germany: the EUSTORY network connects civil society organizations in over 20 countries that conduct national history competitions.
But what contribution do history competitions make to historical culture? What has been the impact of research projects in the region? What are the conditions for success in the participation of students in the culture of history? What concepts/ideas and framework conditions does sustainable student research need? The section takes the 50th anniversary of the History Competition of the Federal President as an opportunity to publicly discuss these questions at the interface of science, teaching and historical-cultural practice. In the first part of the section, the functions and structures of historical research by students will be systematized in a scientific-analytical way from the perspective of history and history didactics as well as from the perspective of public history. Afterwards, historical-cultural actors from municipal archives, schools and the Körber Foundation will discuss challenges and future perspectives of historical research by students.
