SUMMARY:[Historikertag 2023] Present Past in the Era of Global Crises: Local Colonial Heritage in German Cities
DESCRIPTION:"Human zoos," the Bismarck Monument, the Humboldt Forum, Mohrenstraße, or restitution of museum holdings: At present, many cities in Germany are increasingly dealing with their respective local colonial legacies. Hamburg, for example, is working on a "city-wide decolonizing remembrance concept," in 2020 Berlin launched the pilot project "Decolonial Remembrance Culture in the City," and Leipzig officially declared its intention to "incorporate Leipzig's colonial history into its culture of remembrance." In the process, local, often migrant-based initiatives are receiving increased media and political resonance for their critique of the treatment of colonial heritage. This is happening while disputes about the presence and value of the past are on the rise and, in the process, often orienting and exclusionary narratives of the national are experiencing a renaissance. 
How can these developments be explained, what are the connections and what role is played by the fact that global crises (climate crisis, pandemic, energy crisis, questioning of democratic orders) are increasingly shaping perceptions of the future in the rich industrialized countries and thus in the (former?) colonial centers? How can colonial heritage be visualized locally in this age of global crises? And: What is the relationship between colonial narratives, which have so far been shaped primarily locally in Germany and the spatio-temporal, Eurocentric world order claims of modernity, such as progress, nation and history?
The section brings together leading civil society and post-migrant initiatives with practitioners of urban working through the past and university-affiliated researchers to reflect on the multi-perspectival and multi-directional visualization of colonial heritage at the local level and the associated spatio-temporal re-evaluations.
