DESCRIPTION:The Spanish flu is a phenomenon whose historicity is once again coming to the forefront in light of the current Covid-19 pandemic. Unlike today, the Spanish flu broke out in central Europe, which was struggling with extraordinarily severe and diverse crises - summarized as "multiple" crises. War, hunger, shortages and the collapse of state systems - all these events occupied the attention of the actors and shook up their individual priorities. The existential threat to the entire population, regardless of social barriers, was a characteristic of this time, which found its communication channel in spontaneously formed "crisis collectives". These fleeting communities that arose from the crises sought to satisfy the basic needs of their members within a limited period and redefine their bodily experience in public space. As the sources on the Spanish flu make clear to us, the disease was not one of the leading communication topics of contemporaries. It depended on the individual collectives how the known facts about the disease were communicated, with the various approaches invariably based on "fragile facts". The focus of this study on the Spanish flu is on the crisis and bodily experience of the actors in the urban space of the disintegrating Central European empires, in which the various manifestations of crisis were compounded due to population concentration. Our goal is to use this approach to present the ubiquitous fragile factual situation regarding the Spanish flu in relation to the experiences of various collectives and their actors.
