Game-based Learning and Classical Antiquity DESCRIPTION:"A game must be fun!" is the central requirement in game development. Countless decisions in the development process of digital games are shaped by this motto. However, this also means that due to playability, mechanics or cost reasons, decisions often have to be made at the expense of historical accuracy. Can historical video games, which are intended for entertainment, be used to convey historical knowledge at all? Game-based learning is usually associated with serious games and gamification. In the private sector, the mediation of ancient topics often takes place through entertainment media such as books, films and video games because, for example, in the Saxon curriculum for grammar schools, dealing with antiquity in history lessons is already provided for in grades 5 and 6. Therefore, it is necessary to provide students and teachers with a methodical approach to these resources that takes into account the specific questions and challenges of ancient studies. This cannot be accomplished by media studies or game studies alone; at the same time, the specificities of digital games must be taken into account and the potential of a positive player experience for conveying knowledge must be considered. In exchange with the students of Friedrich-Arnold-Brockhaus-Gymnasium in Leipzig, our section aims to focus on the possibilities and limitations of the medium. Because digital games are not only becoming increasingly popular, but since 2008 they have also been recognized as cultural assets by the German Cultural Council and since 2020/21, the federal government has been promoting game development as a "driver of innovation".
