SUMMARY:[Historikertag 2023] The (Ab)use of the Medieval Past: Nationalist and Far-Right Uses of the Middle Ages
DESCRIPTION:Without caring about scientific findings, nationalist and extreme right-wing actors repeatedly use problematic medieval narratives in order to ascribe historical depth to their political goals. Medieval studies are helpless in the face of such attempts unless it is able disseminate its research findings beyond the confines of internal scholarly debates. At the same time, there is a danger of merely countering political instrumentalizations of historical epochs with a "how it actually was’ approach." The analysis of the current political misuse of medieval images must become a core topic of medievalist research in order to fight against this helplessness. On the one hand, the section presents exemplary medieval narratives of nationalist and extreme right-wing actors in their communicative and political function: which groups, parties and media are particularly present in the dissemination and reinterpretation of medieval themes and narratives? How does this fit into their rhetorical and political strategies and ideologies? On the other hand, we will reflect on what expertise needs to be brought together to contribute as medieval studies to the elucidation of fragile facts and interpretations beyond academic discourses. Many of the right-wing medieval narratives already exist in rudimentary form in popular culture, in computer games, films, or reenactment scenes and are thus even less likely to be recognized as politically problematic and analyzed in terms of their significance for the extreme right. How can historians from different eras and areas of expertise work together and which channels must be activated and used for this purpose?
