DESCRIPTION:The question of facticity has always been associated with Oral History. For a long time, its results were considered by many historians to be both methodologically and substantively fragile. Instead of historical facts, subjective memories were collected, and interpretations based on a few interviews were neither representative nor verifiable. In other words: fragile facts.
Meanwhile, more and more research projects are utilizing Oral History interviews. Beyond the history of events, they seek to understand biographical experiences and individual and collective memory patterns in their historical significance.
Thanks to digitization, Oral History analyses can now be conducted on a broader basis. Digitally stored interviews can be considered exemplary research data, as they are sources generated in collaboration with interviewees during the research process, which should be available for later verifications and secondary analyses.
Digital platforms such as the Fortunoff Archive at Yale University or the research environment Oral-History.Digital at Freie Universität Berlin make previously hard-to-access Oral History interviews available for secondary analyses and linkable with other sources. Digital analyses such as Topic Modelling enable data-driven explorations even in unexplored collections.
However, the qualitative, audio-visual and privacy-sensitive data of Oral History present methodological, technical and ethical challenges to such digital projects. Digital search environments pose a risk of decontextualizing individual interview segments, even if they facilitate source-oriented analyses. Do digital interfaces turn the "Era of the Witness" into the "Era of the User"? Are quantitatively working search algorithms suitable for the qualitative data of the interviews? Do algorithmic artifacts potentially overshadow the fragile memories of the interviewees?
