SUMMARY:[Historikertag 2023] Above and Below: Spaces, Infrastructure and the Social Order of the Modern Age
DESCRIPTION:The panel discusses the role of infrastructure in the design of socio-spatial order in the 19th and 20th centuries. Both above ground and underground infrastructures, including mobility, logistics, energy, and material supply and disposal, enabled the functioning of the globalized world economy and private households. They were also inseparably linked to processes of self-understanding of societies. Examples include the inclusion and exclusion of certain population groups in the construction of drinking water networks, the storage of power relations in colonial infrastructures, and the negotiation of social categories of difference in the use and maintenance of urban lighting infrastructures and traffic education and pedagogy. In the 19th and 20th centuries, infrastructures provided a field of experimentation in which competing groups determined norms of their coexistence. While the relationship between infrastructures and social orders has been studied, we still know little about the spatial dimension of these processes. Such a shift in emphasis seems overdue, as modern societies also used infrastructures to determine and spatialize key differences in Western thought, such as the relationship between top and bottom. Inspired by current debates on the space and spatiality of infrastructures and drawing on recent insights from (colonial) urban, environmental, and technological history, the panel asks what we see better or more accurately when we examine infrastructures in their heights, widths, and depths and what implications this perspective has for the study of social ordering processes. In doing so, the panelists also discuss the implications of this shift in perspective for the history of infrastructure planning, control, use, and maintenance. Overall, the panel brings together current research in this field and contributes to its further development.
