From Stability back to the Fluidity of State Borders – European History in Shambles DESCRIPTION:At the latest with the full-scale war of aggression launched by Russia against Ukraine on February 24, 2022, all hopes for containment or abatement of the territorial and military conflict waged by the Russian government since 2014 between the largest and second-largest states in Europe have proved misguided. Instead, violations of the fundamental documents co-initiated by the Soviet Union and still formally supported by Russia are being enforced with escalating violence. The rule-breaking is simultaneously accompanied by neo-imperial historical images and paradoxically with decolonialist set pieces of the concept of a multipolar world, arbitrarily constructed scenarios that violate the internationally agreed immutability of national borders. Against this backdrop, the discussion panel will provide historical perspectives on the historicity of the relatively young concept of fixed and immutable state borders in the (trans)regional and European context. The participants represent very different research foci in thematic, temporal, and regional aspects so that, in addition to current or (post)Soviet contexts and after-effects, the cultural relevance of imperial and early modern border concepts in the face of current neo-imperial ambitions and nation-state legitimation are brought into play. The spectrum of expertise ranges from today's Ukraine and Russia to the Soviet Union and Ukrainian state concepts of the 20th century, to Austria-Hungary, the Russian Empire, Poland-Lithuania, and the Ukrainian Hetmanate in a transregional context. The panel discussion will be less a strict sequence of lectures but rather a debate, introduced by a few short statements by the participants. Der Beitrag Russia’s War Against Ukraine.
