DESCRIPTION:After more than a hundred years during which osteological and forensic expertise on human remains and dead bodies was limited to archaeological excavations, autopsy rooms, and courtrooms, "bones" have now gained high media presence and popularity. In the context of exhumations related to war and mass violence, human remains as objects in colonial collections, or in the realm of big questions of prehistory and early history, bones and their forensic, provenance-related, or archaeogenetic investigation promise objectivity, classification and clarity regarding gender, origin, "race" and ethnicity, cause of death, and the presence of a crime. But to what extent is the popular belief "bones never lie" (Kathy Reichs) true?
In this interdisciplinary and epoch-spanning section, various practices of scientific examination, documentation, and exhibition of human remains will be explained. The speakers will critically question what factual information bones carry, to what extent their authenticity and "truth" are fragile and manipulable and to what extent political interests can construct certainties. At the same time, it should not be forgotten that human remains are not only objects but also ancestors and relatives. The handling of bones not only touches on archaeological, science-historical and forensic questions but also ethical, religious, and cultural ones. Our focus is on the interplay of different epistemic practices that apparently produce evidence-based knowledge and make human remains into very different entities: ancestors, relics, or evidence.
