SUMMARY:[Historikertag 2023] “Multidirectional Memories“ in Conflict – Agents and Negotiations in Four Different Fields of Memory Politics
DESCRIPTION:Who owns which memory and which history is more worth remembering today? Current debates about "multidirectional memories" (Michael Rothberg) and "vanishing points of memory" (Natan Sznaider) show that especially postcolonial approaches are discussed controversially and profitably. This is not only about the question of the incomparability of the Holocaust, but also about the question of the meaningfulness of particularization versus universalization of historical events and thus the pluralization of memories. The last two centuries of German history are full of injustice, violence, violation of human rights and mass murder. The German politics of the 1980s and 1990s, the Nazi period and the Holocaust and later the history of injustice of the SED dictatorship, are currently supplemented by topics on the history of colonialism and queer history. But time and attention are limited, the interests and questions about the past in our migration society are pronounced and weighted differently. Under these conditions, memories compete for legitimacy and attention in history classes and extracurricular learning places. 
The section will discuss which changes the concept of "multidirectional memory" has brought about for the German culture of remembrance and politics of history. Four contributions address this question from different perspectives of memory culture. They discuss the specific discourses of memory and bring them into conversation with the current debates on plural, particular, universal and/or "multidirectional" memories and their chances and challenges for historical learning.
