Abstract:

Diamanten waren langlebige Güter, die im Laufe der Frühen Neuzeit nicht nur zunehmend global zirkulierten, sondern dabei auch laufend ihren Dingstatus und ihren Wert veränderten. Dieses Paper zeigt, dass Diamanten einerseits das Potential besaßen, den Akteuren ihrer „Karrieren“ gleichermaßen astronomische Gewinne und ruinöse Verluste zu bescheren, dass dem Changieren ökonomischer und symbolischer Werte jedoch andererseits eine transkulturelle Wertschätzung im global life der Diamanten gegenüberstand.

Gain, loss, and transcultural values in the global life of diamonds

Diamonds were long-lived goods that not only circulated globally during the early modern period, but also continuously changed their status as things and their value. This paper shows how on the one hand, diamonds had the potential to earn protagonists of their “careers” astronomical gain as well as ruinous loss, but on the other hand how the shifting economic and symbolic value was complimented by a transcultural esteem in the global life of diamonds.
